Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) has expressed its satisfaction with the progress recorded in the construction of a 140-metre Kitengule Bridge in Missenyi District.<\/p>\n

Tanroads Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Engineer Rogatus Mativila, who led a team of experts from the Ministry of Works and Transport made the remarks during an inspection tour of the bridge on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“After visiting the bridge, we are happy with the work progress which has now reached almost 69 per cent. We are optimistic that the project will be completed and handed over to the government before December 9, this year,” he said.<\/p>\n

Engineer Mativila explained that the bridge, which is expected to cost about 25.367bn\/- upon completion, will link Kagera Sugar with the neighbouring Kyaka-Bugene Road and Kakunyu Ward, and also ease transportation of sugar cane from the farms to the Kagera Sugar Factory.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Engineer Lucas Nyaki from Luptan Consultants, who supervises the construction of the bridge cited the effects of Covid-19 and continuing rains as among factors that delayed the project to be completed on the agreed 36- month timeframe.<\/p>\n

However, he said that the work was in advanced stages and would be completed before December 9 this year.<\/p>\n

A Fields Officer from the Kagera Sugar Company, Lebahati Emmanuel, hailed the government for constructing the bridge, adding that about 150,000 tonnes of sugarcane would be ready to be ferried across the bridge.<\/p>\n

“In the past we had to transport the sugarcane from Kitengule to Kyaka-Kagera Sugar covering a distance of 120 kms, which negatively affected sugar production,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Kitengule Bridge is among mega projects initiated by the late President John Magufuli and will facilitate easy transportation of people and goods in Missenyi District.<\/p>\n

The bridge construction is being undertaken by a contractor Ms China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd (CHICO), at a cost of 25,366,666,667\/-. The date of original contract completion was set on October 26th, 2019 but had to be extended due to Covid-19 impacts and heavy rains.<\/p>\n
