Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by infection with freshwater parasitic worms in certain tropical and subtropical countries.<\/p>\n<p>NIMR Researcher, Dr Teckla Angelo, sounded the warning on Wednesday during the dissemination of a project report dubbed \u2018Wiser\u2019 held in Misungwi District.<\/p>\n<p>The project was conducted in Mwakalima, Chore, Kigongo and Nya&#8217;molongo villages between 2017 and 2020 aimed at reducing the spread of schistosomiasis in the district.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The disease is a serious threat since Tanzania is the second most affected country in Africa, behind Nigeria and over 200 million people suffer from the disease, worldwide, annually,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed that in order to fight schistosomiasis and other related diseases, such as cholera, people should stop defecating on water sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCholera is also a threat since it is found in about 76 countries \u2026 worldwide. It has been spreading across Tanzania, especially in Lake Zone and Indian Ocean zone&#8230; people should stop polluting water sources,\u201d she reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>NIMR Mwanza Centre Managing Director, Dr Safari Kinung&#8217;hi, stressed that schistosomiasis prevalence is high in Lake Zone as findings in Misungwi showed that in every 10 year old children, half of them are infected.<\/p>\n<p>Misungwi District Council Health officer, Dr Clement Sobe, expressed his gratitude to NIMR for conducting the research and proposing mitigation measures that will help to fight the disease.<\/p>\n<p>He said that before the findings, the prevalence was high as in 1000 patients, between 50 and 54 people were infected.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of impact this disease is second only to malaria as the most devastating parasitic disease. Schistosomiasis is considered one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).The parasites that cause schistosomiasis live in certain types of freshwater snails.
