Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE government has already taken disciplinary action against 63 civil servants, including councils\u2019 directors and heads of departments for failing to comply with government directives to set aside 40 per cent of revenue for development activities in their areas.<\/p>\n

It has been noted that some councils do not allocate 40 per cent of local revenue to development activities as required by law, and instead have been forcing citizens to contribute to fund planned development projects.<\/p>\n

Responding to a question asked by Mbozi legislator George Mwenisongole (CCM) in Parliament in Dodoma, Deputy Minister in the President\u2019s Office, (Regional Administration and Local Government) Dr Festo Dugange said punitive measures have been taken to officials who disobeyed the lawful order.<\/p>\n

However, he said despite the shortcomings from the few civil servants, numerous councils are doing well in allocating that amount as required. \u201cIn the financial year 2019\/2020, a sum of 216.4bn\/- was spent on development activities, equivalent to 70.87 per cent of the money that should have been spent on development projects,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

In addition, the deputy minister said that in the financial year 2020\/21, at least 279.7bn\/- has been spent on development projects, equivalent to 92 per cent of the funds that should have been spent on development projects.<\/p>\n

Dr Dugange hinted that the annual budget preparation manual has already been issued by the government, which directs all councils in the country to allocate a portion of local revenue for implementation of development projects.<\/p>\n

He directed the Local Government Authorities (LGA) leaders to ensure that the government directives are implemented effectively.<\/p>\n
