Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has welcomed the recommencement of the Air France direct flights to Indian Ocean semiautonomous archipelagos, saying it will give a big boost to the tourism industry, a leading source of income for isles economy.<\/p>\n

Dr Mwinyi issued the remarks during his talk with French Ambassador to Tanzania Nabil Hijilaoui, at the Vuga-based Zanzibar State House.<\/p>\n

The French envoy was on a familiarization tour following his recent appointment to the post.<\/p>\n

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two leaders to deliberate on various development projects in Zanzibar that can be supported by the French government.<\/p>\n

He said the recommencement of flights by several airlines to Zanzibar has increased the number of visitors, a move that is helping to strengthen the tourism industry which has been seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“We invite more airlines to have connections to Zanzibar and also welcome investors in various projects including power generation from solar and wind to ensure reliable power supply to people and investors,” Dr Mwinyi said.<\/p>\n

He said that in addition to the growing demand for reliable power supply, Zanzibar also faces a shortage of production of safe water, including in areas with tourist hotels. He said improving the water sector was among areas of priority for his government.<\/p>\n

Dr Mwinyi commended the French government for its support of various social and development projects noting that the move will help to accelerate the realization of the blue economy plan.<\/p>\n

He informed the envoy on progress of the construction of the new ‘Oil and Gas Port’ at Manga-Pwani coastal area and that the project also involves developing other ports.<\/p>\n

“We have identified several investment opportunities available, so we invite Investors from France to come and invest in Zanzibar,\u201d said President Mwinyi.<\/p>\n

The president reassured that Zanzibar is politically stable and safe for investors and tourists, noting that the government has established a special tourist protection unit (Tourism Police) to ensure all visitors arriving in isles are safe throughout their stay.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the French envoy expressed gratitude to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar for its cooperation with his country, while commending the prevailing peace and stability in the isles.<\/p>\n

He also applauded President Mwinyi for his exemplary leadership.<\/p>\n

The ambassador promised to encourage investors from France to come to Zanzibar to invest in various development projects.<\/p>\n

Air France, which is part of the Air France-KLM Group, commenced its flights to Zanzibar on October 19 this year.<\/p>\n

While the airline seeks to further strengthen its presence in the East Africa region. Air France operates two flights a week on Tuesday and Saturday between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Zanzibar.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, President Mwinyi also met with a delegation of doctors from the ‘Hackland University Hospital’ in Norway, who have been assisting the Psychiatric Hospital in areas of infrastructure development, equipment and training, asking them for an extension of their support.<\/p>\n
