Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE public have been advised to practice the proper use of medicines in order to prevent antimicrobial resistances.<\/p>\n

The advice was given by Dr Elibariki Mwakapije from FAO-Tanzania during media training on the importance of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) which is celebrated from November 18-24 every year.<\/p>\n

“This week is commemorated every year with the aim of raising awareness on antimicrobials resistance and encouraging the general public to practice proper use of medicines in order to prevent antimicrobials resistance” he said.<\/p>\n

He said FAO has lined up different activities to educate and raise awareness in the country through various statements which will be given into relation with the problem.<\/p>\n

Different local and international organizations have teamed up with the government to commemorate the event. Some of them are World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).<\/p>\n

They work together using one hand approach to make sure that the problem of antimicrobial resistance is contained.<\/p>\n

On his part, Assistant Director in Prime Minister’s Office, Disaster Management Department Charles Msangi said while opening the orientation workshop on antimicrobial resistance for Journalists that there is a need for health care providers and stakeholders to stop administering or using medicines which are not prescribed by medical personnel .<\/p>\n

He said the World Antimicrobials Awareness week is an ideal time to educate the public on the need to use medicines which have been recommended by medical doctors.<\/p>\n

Roll Back Antimicrobial Resistance (RBA Initiative) Executive Director Mr Erick Venant explained that the proper use of medicines cuts across all sectors of human, animals and the environment.<\/p>\n

Mr Venant who is also a pharmacist said that the problem is being accelerated by different behaviours which are practiced by the communities without knowing that they are accelerating the problem of antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n

“People should not use any medicines or drugs to treat themselves, animals or apply on the vegetables or environment without seeking advice and instruction from health care providers,” he said.<\/p>\n

Citing an example, he said some groups of medicine such as antibiotics, anti-parasites, anti-fungal are currently not effective in treating different diseases which were once treatable.<\/p>\n

He also advised the general public to change their behavior and adhere to some simple behaviour such as washing and cleaning their hand saying some infectious diseases are caused by unhygienic hands.<\/p>\n

“I am also advising people to complete their medicine doses. Some people do not complete doses as advised by the health experts as a result they fuel the infection problem,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to experts, antimicrobial resistance can be prevented if various initiatives are put in place, such as creating public awareness that will help people to take preventive measures such as taking the right dose of antibiotics, hand washing to prevent infections spreading, proper disposal of medicines, safe sex and vaccination.<\/p>\n
