Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Police Force and other road safety stakeholders to deliberate on how the private sector will be engaged in motor vehicle inspection.<\/p>\n

The Head of State issued the directive on Tuesday in Arusha while inaugurating the Road Safety Week 2021. She warned authorities releasing road safety stickers without proper inspections in the pretext of shortage of resources.<\/p>\n

She reminded the Police Force that the private sector is interested and had already submitted proposals to participate in the inspection of vehicles, but unfortunately none responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ask the Police Force, Transport Ministry, TEMESA [Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Services Agency] and other stakeholders to sit and discuss on how you can work together with the private sector in the inspections of vehicles,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The advantages of working with the private sector, according to President Samia, is reliability and cost sharing between government and the stakeholders.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Head of State declined to accept the Road Safety Council\u2019s plea to fund its activities through fines paid by motorists fearing that the body will invest more on fining instead of curbing road accidents.<\/p>\n

However, she advised the council to invest more on minimization of dangerous driving to save people’s lives and properties.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Traffic Police Commander ACP Mutafungwa requested the government to install cameras in cities\/towns and highways because it will enable the country to curb road accidents.<\/p>\n

He said the advantages of using the devices were to broaden transparency, reduce road accidents and use fewer police officers.<\/p>\n

The event was well attended by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Sirro and other top government officials.<\/p>\n
