Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>ZANZIBAR President, Hussein Mwinyi has pledged to work closely with Benjamin Mkapa Foundation (BMF), including contributing to the institution’s endowment fund which seeks to make health services accessible to all people.<\/p>\n

President Mwinyi made the pledge at the Zanzibar State House during his talks with the BMF Board of Trustees delegation led by its Chairperson, Dr Adeline Kimambo.<\/p>\n

The President commended the foundation for the great work it has been doing in sup- porting the health sector, and promised full cooperation in preparing the commemoration of the death of the third phase president Benjamin Mkapa ex- pected to be held next year in Zanzibar.<\/p>\n

He expressed gratitude to the BMF board for choosing Zanzibar to host the commemo- ration of the death of Mkapa.<\/p>\n

The Isle President further applauded the foundation for its good performance in executing its activities in Zanzibar despite some challenges.<\/p>\n

“Zanzibar government is committed to strengthen the health sector, especially in im- proving infrastructure … we will ensure effective utilisation of the relief package provided by International Monetary Fund to enable the country cushion the impact of the Co- vid-19 pandemic,\u201d President Mwinyi noted.<\/p>\n

He commended various efforts being undertaken by the foundation to strengthen the health sector, including providing employment to health personnel.<\/p>\n

The Isle President further noted that his government in- tends to put in place a system which will enable workers employed by the foundation to be incorporated into the government system upon ex- piry of their contracts.<\/p>\n

Earlier, BMF Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ellen Senkoro said that the next commemoration of the death of Mkapa will be held in Zanzibar next year and will be accompanied by various activities, includ- ing a symposium and national addresses.<\/p>\n

She noted that the board was in final stages of preparations, noting that it was currently preparing to present its request to the Zanzibar government so that they can get members who will join the organising committees.<\/p>\n

The CEO noted that BMF has started preparing vari- ous programmes in Zanzibar since October this year, in- cluding the fight against Covid- 19 and Tuberculosis.<\/p>\n

She said the foundation has employed 105 workers from different cadres in the health sector in both Unguja and Pemba who have been dispatched in 33 health facilities, ports and airports, of which 100 will work on contract basis for nine months and five of them for one year.<\/p>\n

Dr Senkoro further said that BMF has conducted vari- ous trainings for the workers, including public service ethics, mother and child and Covid- 19, noting that preliminary results indicate an increase in the number of people who go for pandemic jabs.<\/p>\n

Similarly, she said the foundation has had signifi- cant cooperation with the Zanzibar Ministry of Health, Social Welfare, Gender and Children in various fields, with the aim of strengthening the health sector.<\/p>\n

Launching the Endow- ment Fund in mid July this year, President Samia Suluhu Hassan promised that the government would contribute to the Fund.<\/p>\n

According to BMF, the aim of establishing the Fund was to enable it to be a sustainable source of funding that would allow the Foundation to fulfill its responsibilities.<\/p>\n
