Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE Institute of Tax Administration (ITA) has been picked to mentor South Sudan on establishing a tax system for the youngest nation in East African bloc to pick up.<\/p>\n

The tax institute, which celebrates its 14th graduation tomorrow, will mentor the country on how to prepare strategic tax plans plus manning, salary structures among others services.<\/p>\n

ITA Rector Prof Isaya Jairo told a press conference that the institute has emerged as one of outstanding academic institutions which are offering tax and customs training in East African bloc.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is after ITA participated in highly competitive bids and emerged winners among local and global firms. We are proud on behalf of Tanzania that we are exporting tax consultancy amongst EAC nations,\u201d Prof Jairo said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

He said that the heads of South Sudan, Liberia and Malawi, tax bodies are expected to attend the graduation that will see some 387 students graduating.<\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow we are holding 14th graduation ceremony where prospective graduates will be conferred with certificates, diploma, degree and postgraduate degrees\u2014 some are coming from different parts of EAC,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Some of the unique courses offered at the institute include Eastern African customs and freight forwarding certificates, rules and regulations in the customs areas.<\/p>\n

The graduation event will take place at ITA\u2019s premises in Dar es Salaam and expected to be graced by the Minister of Finance and Planning Dr Mwigulu Nchemba. The ITA is an integral part of Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and dates to the era of the former EAC that collapsed in 1977, with the idea of re-establishing it as an offshoot of the then Mombasa Customs Training Centre to train customs officials.<\/p>\n

In 1982, with the collapse of the EAC, Tanzania made a strategic decision to establish ITA as a training centre not only for customs, but also tax officials from the then two tax departments of Income Tax and Sales Tax under the Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n

Currently ITA operates as a training wing of the TRA and over the years it has been providing a substantial part of the TRA\u2019s local short-term training requirements as well as some specialized longterm training courses.<\/p>\n
