Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) used regional forum to share the country\u2019s success story in registering births, particularly during Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The regional forum, involved representatives of key life events registration agencies from different African countries, was held recently in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The aim of the meeting was to exchange experiences over increasing speed of registering key life events-births, marriages, divorces, deaths and adoptions- and put strategies for strengthening registration systems in Africa.<\/p>\n

In her presentation, Rita\u2019s Chief Executive Officer Emmy Hudson highlighted achievements attained in improving the systems of registration of births and deaths, a move which went along with bringing services closer to people for registering children under five in 22 regions in Tanzania mainland.<\/p>\n

Another success was to link those systems with health systems, where life events of births and deaths occur, to reduce registration steps from three to one whereby certificate is issues on the spot after registration.<\/p>\n

This has led to registration of 7 million children so far and were all issued with birth certificates, thus increasing the number of registered children from 13 per cent in 2012 to 65 per cent in 2021.<\/p>\n

Ms Hudson further pointed out that the agency has also made strides in installing digital systems in all its offices for registration in 139 districts and 146 councils.<\/p>\n

Also, it strengthened record keeping system, introducing electronic registration system known as E-Huduma and updated the law on births and deaths registration.<\/p>\n

She attributed the agency\u2019s success to cooperation from stakeholders, including Constitution and Legal Affairs Ministry, President\u2019s Office (Regional Administration and Local Governments), Immigration Department, Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children as well as National Identification Authority (NIDA).<\/p>\n
