Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>GEITA Gold Mining (GGM) has contributed over 84m\/- to support the government\u2019s initiatives to fight against HIV and AIDS.<\/p>\n

GGM and Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), under the umbrella of the Kilimanjaro Challenge, are playing a pioneering role in raising awareness of the pandemic and look forward to the day when the country declares a zero HIV and AIDS infection in the region.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the World AIDS Day commemorations in Mbeya, GGM\u2019s Vice-President for Sustainability, Mr Simon Shayo said GGM Kili Challenge is a private sector initiative that has been supporting the government for over 20 years in fighting the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe initiative through our grantees remains deeply committed to achieving epidemic control of HIV through the provision of equitable, personcentred services that respect the dignity and rights of all those who put their trust in us, particularly the most vulnerable,\u201d Mr Shayo said adding<\/p>\n

\u201cwithout bold action against inequalities, the world risks missing the targets to end AIDS by 2030,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme is \u2018End inequalities. End AIDS, End Pandemics\u2019, is key for the Geita community and Tanzania at large\u2019. GGM has also organised a voluntary HIV testing campaign for two weeks targeting 80 per cent of its 5000 workers, both direct employees and contractors.<\/p>\n

The first two weeks of this month the gold mining firm invited 15 HIV trained counsellors from the government and private hospitals to conduct HIV Voluntary Testing across the mine compound.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith over 5,000 direct employees and contractors, GGM represents a significant portion of the Geita Township community whom, if well equipped with HIV and AIDS knowledge, will be a positive influence among the Geita community,\u201d Mr Shayo said<\/p>\n
