Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>PRIME MINISTER Kassim Majaliwa has said the government recognizes and appreciates the contribution of religious leaders\u2019 peace committees in building and preserving peace in the country.<\/p>\n

The Premier stated that the peace that the country has enjoyed since independence, now in its 60th anniversary, is a fruit of efforts by religious leaders who have formed interfaith peace committees.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove, nationalism and unity are foundations in strengthening peace, unity and solidarity,\u201d PM Majaliwa stated.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister made the remarks over the weekend in Dar es Salaam when he officiated in an event to mark the 100th anniversary of Buddhism in Africa.<\/p>\n

Mr Majaliwa also called upon the leaders, followers and friends of Buddhism to maintain tolerance among each other as they mark a century of Buddhism in Africa.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he congratulated the Buddhist association in Tanzania for offering different social services, including helping vulnerable children.<\/p>\n

Through their Kind Heart Africa Charitable Organisation, the Buddhists have continued implementing various projects aimed at improving the provision of social services.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been told that you have plans to introduce a health centre and establish elderly centre to help poor elders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On its part, the Buddhist Association of Tanzania expressed commitment to contributing more to the country’s socio-economic efforts.<\/p>\n

Representing the members of the association, Mr Xian Hong, who doubles as Master of the Chinese Buddhist temple of Tanzania, said they would always pray for peace, harmony, unity and development of Tanzania while offering moral and material support to needy communities.<\/p>\n

“We want to utilize Buddhist knowledge in helping Tanzania and its people; we conduct charity activities and have an orphanage which sponsors 12 orphans studying at Mikocheni primary school,\u201d Mr Hong said.<\/p>\n

The event was held at the Chinese Buddhist headquarters in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur plan is to help orphans get education, medical services and enable them to have a brighter future. This will be through establishing vocational training and schools, \u201cinsisted Mr Xian.<\/p>\n

He also added that Buddhism is also planning to build schools whereby they have already secured 11 acres of land in Kigamboni for that purpose.<\/p>\n

The association also plans to construct a hospital in a rural area that will provide free medical services in efforts to ensure that rural dwellers access better health services.<\/p>\n

“We welcome anybody to join with us in our endeavour in improving our society. We thank the government for supporting us and recognizing our presence because they treat us well. We are given the right to worship and our priests get the same recognition as the priests of other religions, we are thankful,\u201d added Chief Priest of Africa Buddhism, Rev Dr Ilukpitiye Pannasekara.<\/p>\n

The ceremonies were attended by guests from Sri lanka, India, China, Australia, Malawi, Tanzania and other member countries across the continent where Buddhism exists and the world in general.<\/p>\n

Tanzania Buddhist Temple and Meditation Center is the oldest and first Buddhist temple in Africa. It was Sri Lankan people who, in the 20th century, established the Buddhist temple in Tanzania, after they came to work in Dar es Salaam around 1915.<\/p>\n
