Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE government on Sunday said it was making follow up to establish the truth over reports that a traveller from Tanzania tested positive of new variant of Covid-19 on arrival in India.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the State stressed that so far there is no any case of the new variant in the country, as President Samia Suluhu Hassan told the public to refrain from shaking hands to avoid transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n

The President advised people to emulate Japanese\u2019s way of greeting where people slightly bow to show respect and appreciation instead of shaking hands in this era of Covid-19.<\/p>\n

President Samia issued the wakeup call at the grand opening ceremony for the construction and widening of the 4.3km stretch of new Bagamoyo Road, Phase II between Morocco and Mwenge junction held in Dar es Salaam, on Sunday.<\/p>\n

According to her, other countries are currently fighting the new variant, saying this is an alarm for Tanzania to continue taking all the necessary precautions including taking the Covid-19 jabs, for those who have not done so.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t predict when the disease will come and go within the country. As it exists and other countries are already experiencing it, we must consider our movements as human beings, because we can\u2019t be certain on when it will reach us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe construction of infrastructure such as the one we have inaugurated today promotes transport and transportation activities among the people…each and every one has to stay alert by taking precaution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The President added that \u201conce the new variant arrives, it should come with a low pace in terms of infections and deaths. I would like to applaud Japan\u2019s tradition of greeting\u2026when our counterparts greet each other; a person embraces his two palms and slightly bows.\u201d<\/p>\n

She observed that Japan has offered a good lesson to the rest of the world and people have emulated the tradition in these times of fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am saying this because we are executing various transport and transportation projects, meaning the movement rate within and outside the country is also going to rise\u2026it’s clear we cannot contain the spread of the virus by 100 per cent, but what we can do is to take precaution,\u201d stated President Samia.<\/p>\n

Equally, she advised the public to continue with their daily activities but observe set containment measures by health experts.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children Prof Abel Makubi said that there was no sign from any local centres testing Covid-19 which could be associated to Omicron presence, so far.<\/p>\n

“All entry points including borders and international airports are equipped with PCR test and tests are done on all travellers. No sample has shown possibility of Omicron variant infections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prof Makubi made statement upon reports by India media as well as social media that a traveller from Tanzania has been diagnosed with Omicron upon arriving in the country.<\/p>\n

According to him, it was not yet established whether the said patient was travelling from Tanzania or connecting flights and how many days the patient had spent in India, before testing positive of the most recent mutated variant. \u201cWe are working hard to get more information concerning this traveller because it is not yet known whether the person was really from Tanzania or just passed here,” he added.<\/p>\n

He said the ministry in collaboration with Tanzania\u2019s embassy in India was working closely to establish the truth on the matter before taking further steps.<\/p>\n

On the other side, Prof Makubi said the Omicron variant was still a new discovery in health laboratories and there were no evidence if it causes severe symptoms, only mild ones were being detected.<\/p>\n

“Scientists are still examining this new variant, however, all new patients have only shown mild symptoms, therefore it is not yet established if it is a variant of concern,” he stated.<\/p>\n

He insisted that the ministry will from today start inspecting public places and offices to see if Covid-19 measures are being observed, including having hand washing tools, wearing face masks and maintaining social distance.<\/p>\n

The government will also start a door-to-door vaccination campaign to convince more people to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n

So far, there are more than 6000 vaccination centres countrywide, but the new campaign, according to him will go hand in hand with establishment of mobile vaccination centres that would offer service at public places like colleges and universities, houses of worship and bus stands.<\/p>\n

The move is intended to bring the vaccines closer to citizens.<\/p>\n
