Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on Tuesday celebrated another milestone in seeing advancements to youth and girls\u2019 education made under Waache Wasome project.<\/p>\n

According to a statement availed to the media on Tuesday by the USAID Dar es Salaam, the event celebrated and highlighted the successes and sustainability of the US government investments in the Waache Wasome youth activity in promoting staff, students as well as the important role of girls\u2019 empowerment in advancing Tanzania\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

Waache Wasome is a five-year project that started in December 2016 to February 2022 billed at 14.75 million US dollars activity funded by USAID.<\/p>\n

The activity has increased adolescent girls\u2019 enrolment and retention in both formal secondary school and alternative education pathways.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis model has empowered adolescent girls to create and achieve goals for their future while addressing social norms and economic barriers that has constrained their ability to remain and excel in school ,\u201d read part of the statement.<\/p>\n

It further noted that Waache Wasome\u2019s School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) prevention manual and Protect Our Youth peer training manual will be rolled out by the government of Tanzania for nationwide use.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a significant milestone for the project\u2019s training materials to be adopted by the government for use in all schools ,\u201d it indicated.<\/p>\n

The President Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) has also officially adopted and integrated the Dropout Early Warning System (DEWS) module into its School Information System.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll basic education schools, including private and government schools, will use DEWS to track and support students at risk of dropping out.<\/p>\n

Waache Wasome reached more than 50,000 students, 1,300 teachers, and 6,000 parents and caregivers in Arusha and Mara regions.<\/p>\n

Activities focused on addressing harmful gender norms, fostering a girl-friendly and supportive school environment, and increasing communities\u2019 commitment to investing in girls\u2019 education.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, the United States Ambassador to Tanzania Dr. Donald Wright applaud the Waache Wasome program for its accomplishments, and noted that eliminating barriers to girl\u2019s education has many positive ripple effects in society.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy addressing the constraints Tanzanian girls face while in school and in their communities, they are more likely to complete their education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis leads to better health for them and their children, increased employment opportunities, higher incomes, and a reduction in poverty for their households and communities,\u201d he said<\/p>\n

Ambassador Wright also commended the Government of Tanzania for its recent policy change allowing pregnant schoolgirls to continue with formal education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis proclamation indicates a more inclusive approach to education in Tanzania and a positive step forward for Tanzanians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
