Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE German International development agency (GIZ) is planning to inject nearly 8bn\/- to a programme geared to fight gender-based violence against women and girls in the country.<\/p>\n

“GIZ has commissioned 7.7bn\/- for a new development programme called \u2018Access for justice for women and girls\u2019. This will be a long-term cooperation with Tanzania government through the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs,” GIZ Tanzania Country Director Dr Mike Falke announced in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

He was speaking on Wednesday during the opening of an East African Regional forum for discussing borderless partnership against gender based violence.<\/p>\n

The forum involved different stakeholders from East African countries and was graced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Liberata Mulamula.<\/p>\n

Dr Falke added that the key focus of the project which will start early next year is to contribute to improving access to justice for women and girls and protecting them against gender based violence.<\/p>\n

For her part, Representative of the EAC Secretary General Ms Damaris Wambui said cases of gender based violence were increasing not only in Tanzania but in the entire region in recent time amid weaker policies and legal frameworks of punishing the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

“Reported cases at different police stations and in mass media suggest that during Covid-19 outbreak, gender based violence in East Africa increased by over 48 per cent. This is the alarming rate which requires solid interventions to save women and girls from the vice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She said that EAC supports initiative initiated by players like GIZ to improve the society in fighting gender based violence and respecting human rights which are vital for development.<\/p>\n

Minister Mulamula delivered speech for opening of the one-day forum, where she said the initiative by development partners, like GIZ, were welcomed as they are part of the government’s agenda of empowering girls and women and in protecting their rights.<\/p>\n

She said that this would be part of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) which requires that women and girls must have equal rights and opportunity, and be able to live free of violence and discrimination before year 2030.<\/p>\n
