Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE government has directed owners of industries to strengthen safety and health systems at workplaces in order to bring more efficiency and productivity.<\/p>\n

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), Jenista Mhagama, issued the directive over the weekend.<\/p>\n

The minister was on a visit to ALAF Industry which manufactures roofing sheets and other steel products.<\/p>\n

She also visited the Kioo industry. Both industries are based in Temeke, Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

Ms Mhagama said the aim of her visit was to observe how the industries adhere to requirements for health and safety at workplaces as the nation marks 60 years of independence.<\/p>\n

“From the report presented by the management of both industries and what I have observed I have been pleased with many things including strengthened systems for safety and health at workplaces.<\/p>\n

Workers’ benefits have been improved while huge tax is paid to the government,” she explained.<\/p>\n

The ALAF Limited has contributed to the government’s coffers over 290bn\/-. The two industries have created at least 500 jobs each.<\/p>\n

During her visit, the minister was accompanied by Chief Executive Officer of the Occupational Safety and Health Authority ((OSHA), Ms Khadija Mwenda.<\/p>\n

Ms Mwenda commended management of the two industries for putting in place systems that guarantee safety and health at workplaces for their employees.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlaf is a big company which has existed for the past 61 years and we hope that it will further grow. We have been pleased with the minister’s tour through which she also had the opportunity to hear about our achievements and challenges,” Ashish Mistry, General Manager of the Alaf, said.<\/p>\n

On his part, Human Resources Manager of the Kioo Limited, Mr Jacob Msuya, thanked the OSHA for giving them guidance on how to put in place systems for health and safety at the workplace.<\/p>\n
