Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has pardoned 29 inmates who were serving their terms in various reformatory centres in Unguja and Pemba.<\/p>\n

Under Section 59 of the 1984 Zanzibar Constitution, President Mwinyi acquitted the convicts as part of festivities to commemorate the 58th revolution anniversary.<\/p>\n

According to a statement issued by Chief Secretary, Engineer Zena Ahmed Said here yesterday, the President had directed that the remaining terms for the beneficiaries be expunged effective January 11, 2022.<\/p>\n

Zanzibar celebrated the 58th Revolution anniversary on Wednesday with President Mwinyi finding it fit to apply his constitutional clout to relieve the 29 convicts.<\/p>\n

The relief beneficiaries in Unguja are Vuai Juma Makame, Abdalla Juma Abdalla, Mrisho Mohammed Mrisho, Vuai Matogo Vuai, Said Rashid Khamis, FotiJoseph Magingi, Vuai Hassan Mohammed, Juma Omar Risasi, Omar Ali Omar, Abdalla Malik Mohammed, Mohamed Khamis Mohamed, Makame Mdungi Makame, Amar Shukuru Hamad, Sadam Hussein Tajo, Khalfan Mzaka Khalfan and Abdalla Moh\u2019d Marijani.<\/p>\n

The pardon recipients in Pemba are Suleiman Khamis Suleiman, Mohammed Rajab Hamad, Hafidh Ali Abdalla, Yussuf Shaib Juma, Ali<\/p>\n

Bakari Suleiman, Omar Juma Ali, Abdalla Omar Suleiman, Twahiru Muhsin Salim, Sultan Hassan Khat- ib, Ramadhan Hassan Soud, Haji Omar Haji, Hashim Mohammed Khamis and Khamis Sheha Idd.<\/p>\n

The annually provided reprieve targets the elderly, the sick and minor offenders who have displayed a high level of discipline and remorse on their misdeeds.<\/p>\n

The pardon doesn\u2019t include murderers, armed robbers, public resources embezzlers, women and children abusers and drug dealers.<\/p>\n

President Mwinyi on Wednes- day led thousands of Tanzanians\u2014 Zanzibaris and mainlanders\u2014to celebrate the 58th Revolution anniversary at Amani Stadium.<\/p>\n

President Mwinyi arrived at the fully-packed arena few minutes after the union leader\u2014President Samia Suluhu Hassan\u2014drawing big applause from the crowd as green, yellow and purple colored the stadium, reflecting two parties\u2014 Chama Cha Mapinduzi and ACT- Wazalendo\u2014that are in power.<\/p>\n

Addressing the nation on Tues- day night, President Mwinyi cited the country\u2019s peace, unity and solidarity as the key achievement of the 58 years of independent Zanzibar. \u201cThese are indeed the key pillars that have helped us to develop in other sectors,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n

He asked political, religious and civil society organisation leaders as well as all wananchi to remain united for the country\u2019s prosperous future.<\/p>\n

However, Dr Mwinyi decried sexual abuses in the country and asked all islanders to unite against the shameful crimes. He said 928 gender abuse-related cases were reported between January and September last year, a slight de- crease from 1,363 cases reported in the previous year\u2019s corresponding period.<\/p>\n
