Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>DEPUTY Minister for Works and Transport Atupele Mwakibete has directed the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) to enhance the e-ticketing system so as to accommodate consumers who do not have smartphones.<\/p>\n

He issued the directives in Dar es Salaam yesterday during an official visit at TRC headquarters and Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project area.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome consumers in rural areas do not have smartphones, and what about someone who has lost their smartphones or cannot access the internet to receive their ticket? It is critical to upgrade this system so that everyone can get their tickets at their fingertips,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A few customers, he claims, have complained that when they go to the train station multiple times, they are always told that tickets are sold out, causing inconveniences to some of them who travel long distance to get the tickets. TRC launched an e-ticketing system in April 2020, intending to strengthen revenue collections as well as efficiency.<\/p>\n

TRC Director General Masanja Kadogosa earlier noted that their short-term business plan includes improving wagons and locomotives and that they have already received 44 wagons and three locomotives procured with a World Bank soft loan, as part of the Tanzania Intermodal and Rail Development Project (TIRP).<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother goal is that through the TIRP project, the project seeks to repair the railway from Dar es Salaam to Isaka (970km) to improve its freight carrying capacity from 13.5 tonnes axle load to 18.5 axle load,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

TRC also wants to reopen strategic markets that have been shut for a long time, such as freight cargo transportation to Uganda via Lake Victoria and Moshi-Arusha, according to Mr Kadogosa.<\/p>\n

The TRC\u2019s immediate and medium-term plans, according to the TRC\u2019s boss, include rehabilitating closed rails, such as the 107-kilometre Kilosa-Mikumi-Kidatu road, to connect with the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority, or TAZARA, allowing traffic to the lake regions and neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n

He cited a 28 per cent rise in income from 35.9 billion in 2016\/17 to 49.7 billion in 2020\/2021 as one of their accomplishments. Mr Kadogosa stated that in 2018, Tanzania resumed oil and freight transfers to Uganda, as well as World Food Programme (WFP) supplies for use in refugee camps.<\/p>\n

TRC had carried 77,382 tonnes of goods and 3,645,000 gallons of oil to Uganda by November 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve also finished rehabilitating the Tanga-MoshiArusha route and are now delivering the transportation service that has been blocked for nearly 30 years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, two people died and six others were injured after a commuter train collided with their vehicle when the driver ignored the crossing gate. When the car attempted to pass through on Wednesday evening, the train operator and a worker at the area waved the flag to indicate an incoming train to caution the bus driver, but he ignored them, according to TRC officials.<\/p>\n

According to a statement released by TRC, at 11:10 p.m, a commuter train operating between Kamata and Pugu in Dar es Salaam was involved in an accident. Six passengers on board a bus were injured in the accident, three were women and three men. Two women were pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

The injured were all taken to Amana Hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe TRC management confirms the accident that occurred on January 19, 2022, in the Banana area at the railway and road crossing, when a city bus with registration number T701 CKD which plies Tandika and Mbezi route hit the train,\u201d TRC said in a statement. The statement said further that the TRC leadership continues to urge the public to follow the rules and regulations at railway crossings and that when a driver approaches an intersection, he must slow down and stop at a distance of 100 metres to ensure that the road is safe to travel on.<\/p>\n

\u201cTRC expresses its condolences to the families of all passengers who were engaged in the tragedy and prays for the injured to recover quickly so that they can continue to contribute to the nation\u2019s development,\u201d says TRC.<\/p>\n
