Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>TANZANIA Ports Authority (TPA) is finalising an online system that would link all 32 government authorities facilitating imports and exports of goods at the Dar es Salaam Port.<\/p>\n

The new system would harmonise activities of the institutions to work under a single online platform, especially in handling documents, something which is expected to significantly address delays. Currently, each institution has its own online system that does not communicate with that of the TPA.<\/p>\n

\u201cTPA is in the final stages of introducing a new online system which will be accessed by all 32 government authorities with different roles in importing and exporting of cargoes,\u201d authority\u2019s Director General Eric Hamissi said yesterday, while briefing Transport and Works Deputy Minister, Atupelle Mwakibete, who was on familiarisation tour at the Dar es Salaam Port.<\/p>\n

However, he informed the deputy minister that the new system will minimise time for serving customers and make every stage in handling of particular document easy and fast enough and as well monitored by every institution and overseen concurrently and hence, reduce tediousness.<\/p>\n

Mr Hamissi noted that the step undertaken would improve business strategy of the institutions and lure more foreign customers to use the country\u2019s ports, which are safe and secure in comparison to others in the region. Equally, he assured the deputy minister that the authority will definitely meet and exceed its annual target of collecting 1.1tri\/-, considering record attained in the first half of the 2021\/22 during which it collected over 500bn\/-.<\/p>\n

The achievement was attributed to the government\u2019s efforts to invest in purchasing modern equipment for the ports and attracting more businesses, which as a result increase cargo imports and exports at the Dar es Salaam Port.<\/p>\n

Following his visit at the port, Deputy Minister Mwakibete hailed the TPA for improving efficiency which has led to increase of cargo handled, and in turn raise revenue collections for the current financial year.<\/p>\n

However, the Deputy Minister challenged the authority to increase creativity and ensure that more customers opt for Tanzania\u2019s ports for their cargo imports and exports.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a good thing that you have plans to increase efficacy by having one working online system\u2026 it is a high time that TPA now become more creative and come up with best ways of speeding up its cargo handling processes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Mwakibete expressed his gratitude to the TPA, saying that the approach would make the Dar es Salaam Port lead in the Eastern, central and southern Africa\u2019s hub.<\/p>\n

The deputy minister also reminded the TPA that there was a lucrative market in the neighbouring countries, which awaits Tanzania\u2019s ports, adding that only what was needed is working day and night to increase speed and meet customers\u2019 satisfactions.<\/p>\n
