Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has called on the continued efforts to improve communications in Mainland and Zanzibar for quick development.<\/p>\n

He made the statement on Thursday when he met with the Minister for Information, communication and Information Technology Nape Nnauye who paid him a courtesy call at the Zanzibar State House.<\/p>\n

Mr Nnauye was in the isles where among others he witnessed the signing of contracts for the construction of 42 communications towers in Unguja and Pemba islands at a cost of 6.9bn\/-.<\/p>\n

Dr Mwinyi noted the importance of continuing to strengthen the communication sector, saying it was a key issue that facilitated development at individual and national level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to strengthen collaboration between Zanzibar and the union in ensuring all the goals are attained,\u201d said President Mwinyi as he also congratulated Mr Nnauye for being appointed into the cabinet.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mr Nnauye assured the President of a continued cooperation on pushing forward development of the communication sector in the isles. Speaking of the construction of 42 communications towers, Mr Nape said the move aims at providing accurate communication services to all Tanzanians.<\/p>\n

The project, which is being undertaken by the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), is a brainchild of the union government for the sake of providing communications in the hard to reach areas.<\/p>\n

The project is in accordance with the implementation of the election manifesto of the 2020-2025 CCM election manifesto which, among other things, stresses on availing communication services to all.<\/p>\n

Earlier, during the signing ceremony, Zanzibar minister for Works, Transport and Communication Rahma Kassim Ali thanked the UCSAF management for coming up with the project that is beneficial for residents of Unguja and Pemba.<\/p>\n

Speaking, the UCSAF Chief Executive Officer Justine Mashiba said they have been working hard to ensure access to communication for all in both sides of the union in efforts meant to ensure the country achieves its development goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have a number of villages that need communications, we shall continue doing whatever it takes to ensure all the needy areas are provided with communication towers to facilitate communications and stimulate development,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Commenting, the Zanzibar Director for Communications Engineer Clarence Ichwekeleza said the projects have come at the right time, asking Zanzibar\u2019s to make better use of the opportunities that come with the projects for individual and collective development. Meanwhile, President Mwinyi led hundreds of mourners at the burial of the former Chairman of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Council late Said Bakar Jecha, held at his home village of Fumba, West District \u2018B Unguja.<\/p>\n

During his lifetime, the late Jecha also served as the Commissioner of the Zanzibar Ethics Commission and the Minister for Information.<\/p>\n
