High Court Judge Lucia Kairo has commended World Vision Tanzania (WVT) for taking a holistic approach to empower women through training them in entrepreneurship skills.<\/p>\n
She made the remarks during celebrations to mark International Women\u2019s Day which was\u00a0marked at regional level\u00a0in\u00a0Kabindi Ward, Biharamulo District,\u00a0on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Judge Kairo, who was the guest of honour, noted that the empowerment of women was very crucial \u00a0as Tanzania aimed at becoming an industrialised country.<\/p>\n
She noted that\u00a0most of the cases pending in court\u00a0related to inheritance\u00a0where widows were denied the right to inherit land and other properties after the death of the husband.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn some cases, women are the ones who appear to initiate gender-based violence against other women,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Judge Kairo also appealed to women to be bold and contest for various various leadership positions, including\u00a0being councilors and MPs during the forthcoming general election.<\/p>\n
She commended Biharamulo District\u00a0which was led by women, including Ms Saada Malunde, the district commissioner, Ms Hafisa Galihatano,\u00a0 the\u00a0 council chairperson and Ms Wende\u00a0Nga\u2019hala, the district executive director.<\/p>\n
Expounding, she said concerted effort was needed to empower women\u00a0who were basically the family\u2019s backbone.<\/p>\n
\u201cHuman health is central to the development of a nation since healthy people live longer and are more productive and contributing more to the nation\u2019s economy\u2026rural women, \u00a0in particular, have continued suffering debilitating \u00a0poverty occasioned by retrogressive cultural practices and marginalisation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The only source of financial freedom for rural women is productive agricultural enterprises, which unfortunately have not been strengthened enough to eradicate poverty.<\/p>\n
This is despite the fact that rural women contribute immensely to agriculture and rural enterprises, fueling local and global economies.<\/p>\n
They are active players to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Yet, every day around the world, rural women and girls face insurmountable constraints from the prevailing social, economic and political order.<\/p>\n
About 830 women in most developing nations die from preventable causes during pregnancy or childbirth every day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
