Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>WORLD Food Programme (WFP) through its Kigoma Joint Programme (KJP) will see into it that communities living around refugee camps are engaged in economic activities which raise their livelihoods and in turn promote peaceful co-existence between the locals and the immigrants.<\/p>\n

Making the revelation recently in Kasulu, WFP Programme Associate Lucy Rweguizira said in the KJP that cuts across multiple sectors to improve development and human security in Kigoma region managed to build five godowns in Kasulu District, where three of them were repaired in Nyakitoto village for the benefit of the residents who live peacefully with the refugees.<\/p>\n

She further said in the programme for 2017-21 they also see into it that they provide ready market to the local farmers\u2019 produce like red beans that they buy to supply to the nearby camps.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith other stakeholders in the KJP initiave \u2026the programme involves 16 UN Agencies developed to cooperate with the regional and district authorities based on the needs of the people living in Kigoma and the capacities of the UN in Tanzania to support the camps.<\/p>\n

\u201cKigoma region is one of two regions in Tanzania which has experienced a relative increase in poverty levels between the 2001 and 2012 household surveys.<\/p>\n

The Kigoma Joint Programme applies a comprehensive approach to address a wide range of issues facing both the refugees and migrants in the region as well as the surrounding host communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere the humanitariandevelopment nexus is supported by linking together the UN\u2019s existing response to refugees and migrants with an increased focus on developing the host communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cExpanding and increasing the support to host communities will help to promote socio-economic development and decrease tensions and misunderstandings between the refugee\/migrant population and the host population.<\/p>\n

Through supporting stability and prosperity in the Kigoma region the KJP will also assist to support stability in the Great Lakes regional context.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaborating, the Programme Associate noted that the 16 participating UN agencies are cooperating across to achieve six outcomes, which include improving their access to sustainable energy to reduce environmental degradation and promoting youth and women\u2019s economic empowerment.<\/p>\n

The list also highlighted eliminating violence against women and children, improving education with a focus on girls and adolescent girls; improving their access to WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and improving agriculture with a focus on developing local markets.<\/p>\n

She further said WASH will assist local government authorities to sustainably and equitably deliver health services to a larger segment of Kigoma region, adding: \u201cThis means increasing the locals\u2019 access to improved sanitation, promoting hygiene practices as well as safe drinking water among vulnerable communities, children in schools and mothers and new born in healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n

Among the expected impacts of the programme is to make cholera history in Kigoma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citing the programme that is implemented in Kibondo, Kakonko, Kasulu and Uvinza Districts, she further said WFP has also bought weighing machines and related food processing equipment like threshers, besides supported them to start and revive some Agricultural Marketing Co-operative Societies (AMCOS) so that members (farmers) and the general communities\u2019 interests are promoted social and economically.<\/p>\n
