Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE establishment of the Inland Container Depot (ICD) on the Moshi-Arusha highway by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) will significantly contribute to the increase in cargo handled by the Tanga port, creating new jobs as well as increasing government revenues.<\/p>\n

This was stated on Tuesday in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region by the spokesperson of the Tanga port, Mr Peter Milanzi while giving information on the development of the Tanga port, which is East Africa\u2019s oldest port.<\/p>\n

“The process is underway which will enable to expand the scope of the Tanga port services by establishing an Inland Container Depot (ICD) which is expected to be located in the King’ori area along the main Moshi-Arusha highway and geographically, in the middle of the Kilimanjaro and Arusha Regions,\u201d he said, adding that feasibility study related to the establishment of the ICD was in process.<\/p>\n

Mr Millanzi went on to say that the process was part of the improvement that has been made by the management of the Tanga port which he said has contributed to the increase in tonnes of cargo handled by the port.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the 2021\/22 fiscal year, we handled a total of 867,000 tonnes, surpassing the target which was set of serving 750,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n

These figures are just the preliminary results of the major improvement programme which started in 2019,\u201d he said, adding that the goal is to serve 3,000,000 tonnes per year in the near future.<\/p>\n

Mr Millanzi explained other achievements which he said are a result of the ongoing improvements of the port to include an increase in government revenue through various taxes collected.<\/p>\n

He continued to say that the cost of services at the port will also be reduced because the port will no longer provide double handling of services (servicing the ship while at anchor) as well as increasing the efficiency of the port’s operations by reducing cargo transshipment costs.<\/p>\n
