Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE government will sign an agreement for the construction of new two ships cargo and passengers in this financial year to ply in the eastern part of Lake Tanganyika.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Minister for Works and Transport, Eng Fred Mwakibete has said the ship builder is expected to come from Turkey where the details of the cargo and passenger vessels will be revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe contract for building of two new ships will be signed by one of the Turkish firms in this financial year\u20142022\/23,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n

The deputy minister further explained that the two new ships will operate in the eastern side of Lake Tanganyika supplementing duties carried out by the oldest MV Liemba. The Eng Mwakibete said on Wednesday shortly after visiting and inspecting the expansion of Kasanga Port along the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika in Kalambo District, Rukwa.<\/p>\n

According to Eng Mwakibete the new vessels will operate from Kigoma via Karema port in Katavi and Kabwe, Kipili and Kasanga ports in Rukwa and link to various ports in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi and Zambia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater transport is vital in the economy growth of any nation, so the building of the new marine vessels will generally improve and address marine challenges on Lake Tanganyika,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Eng Mwakibete said that the oldest freight and passengers ship MV Liemba is no longer operating due to its age and failed to meet the fast demands on marine transport on Lake Tanganyika.<\/p>\n

MV Liemba was built as a German warship in 1913 for the Imperial Germany Navy and used to maintain German control over Lake Tanganyika.<\/p>\n

Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) acting in charge manager for all ports on Lake Tanganyika, Mr Edward Mabula told the deputy minister that to enhance Kasanga port efficiency, TPA has embarked on a 4.76bn\/- expansion project since last April and was near completion.<\/p>\n

The project involved lengthening the port\u2019s berth from 20 and 120 meters and the width from 11 meters to 14 meters to enable more than one ship to dock at once.<\/p>\n
