Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE Dar es salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) has been challenged to increase the number of female students in the field of mechanical and electrical engineering so that women have equal chances of securing jobs and contributing more to the economy.<\/p>\n

The call was made by the Minister for Industries, Trade and investment, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, in a statement read on her behalf by the ministry\u2019s director for policy and planning, Mr Alfred Mapunda, during a ceremony to award best performing students in the past academic year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is now putting more efforts to realise the industrial economy which relies much on mechanical, electrical and computer engineering fields. Yet the number of women students in different colleges is relatively low and hence, deny women a chance to drive the economy and benefit from opportunities there,\u201d she said<\/p>\n

She directed DIT to develop strategies of motivating girl students to love and opt for science subjects which will enable them to join the engineering faculty at the DIT and become engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The minister said such strategies will benefit women by joining training programmes from which they would acquire skills and qualifications needed in today\u2019s job market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would also be nurtured to be creative and innovative and invent engineering technology and tools needed in the digital age,\u201d she expressed expectations.<\/p>\n

Earlier, DIT principal Prof Preksedis Ndomba, said this year his institute has decided to honor best-performing students in the areas of academic performance and best inventions made.<\/p>\n
