Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>The slave trade\u2019s \u201clegacy of racism\u201d haunts the world to this day, according to UN chief Antonio Guterres.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can draw a straight line from the centuries of colonial exploitation to the social and economic inequalities of today,\u201d Guterres said in a message on Saturday to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we can recognize the racist tropes popularized to rationalize the inhumanity of the slave trade in the white supremacist hate that is resurgent today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The \u201cevil enterprise of enslavement lasted for over 400 years\u201d and has a \u201chistory of suffering and barbarity that shows humanity at its worst,\u201d said the UN secretary-general.<\/p>\n

\u201cMillions of African children, women, and men were trafficked across the Atlantic, ripped from their families and homelands \u2013 their communities torn apart, their bodies commodified, their humanity denied,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

There is also \u201ca history of awe-inspiring courage that shows human beings at their best \u2013 starting with enslaved people who rose up against impossible odds and extending to the abolitionists who spoke out against this atrocious crime,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Today, Guterres asserted, it is \u201cincumbent on us all to fight slavery\u2019s legacy of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education \u2018most powerful weapon\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is marked annually on March 25 since 2007.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme is: \u201cFighting slavery\u2019s legacy of racism through transformative education,\u201d which is what Guterres alluded to in his message.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most powerful weapon in our arsenal is education,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy teaching the history of slavery, we help to guard against humanity\u2019s most vicious impulses. By studying the assumptions and beliefs that allowed the practice to flourish for centuries, we unmask the racism of our own time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said commemorating the day is an attempt to \u201crestore some measure of dignity to those who were so mercilessly stripped of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday and every day, let us stand united against racism and together build a world in which everyone, everywhere can live lives of liberty, dignity, and human rights,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

A separate UN statement also focused on the \u201cracist ideology\u201d behind the slave trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe enslavement of over 13 million Africans during the Transatlantic Slave Trade was driven by the racist ideology that these women, men and children were inferior because of the color of their skin,\u201d read the statement.<\/p>\n
