Qui se focalise non sur ces plane\u0300tes ge\u0301antes, gazeuses donc non propices a\u0300 la vie, mais sur leurs lunes glace\u0301es : Europe et Ganyme\u0300de pour Jupiter ; Encelade et Titan pour Saturne.<\/p>\n<p>Leur atout majeur : abriter sous leur surface de glace des oce\u0301ans d&rsquo;eau liquide \u2013 seule l&rsquo;eau a\u0300 l&rsquo;e\u0301tat liquide rendant la vie possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est la premie\u0300re fois qu&rsquo;on va explorer des habitats au-dela\u0300 de la ligne de gel, la\u0300 ou\u0300 l&rsquo;eau liquide ne peut plus exister en surface\u00a0\u00bb, se fe\u0301licitait Nicolas Altobelli, responsable de Juice pour l&rsquo;Agence spatiale europe\u0301enne (ESA), en janvier chez Airbus a\u0300 Toulouse, ou\u0300 la sonde a e\u0301te\u0301 conc\u0327ue.<\/p>\n<p>La sonde Juice, exploratrice des lunes glace\u0301es de Jupiter. \u00a9 Paz Pizarro, AFP<\/p>\n<p>La future mission de la Nasa Europa Clipper visera Europe. Juice, elle, mise sur Ganyme\u0300de : en 2034, elle devrait se placer en orbite autour de ce satellite naturel, le plus gros du syste\u0300me solaire. C&rsquo;est aussi la seule lune a\u0300 posse\u0301der son propre champ magne\u0301tique, la prote\u0301geant des dangereuses radiations.<\/p>\n<p><b>Oce\u0301an \u00ab\u00a0gigantesque\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Autant de caracte\u0301ristiques sugge\u0301rant un environnement stabilise\u0301, autre condition a\u0300 l&rsquo;e\u0301mergence du vivant&#8230; et a\u0300 son maintien. Car \u00ab\u00a0le tout n&rsquo;est pas que la vie apparaisse, mais qu&rsquo;elle subsiste\u00a0\u00bb, souligne Athe\u0301na Coustenis, chercheuse CNRS au laboratoire Lesia de l&rsquo;Observatoire de Paris-PSL.<\/p>\n<p>Contrairement aux missions sur Mars, en que\u0302te des traces d&rsquo;une vie ancienne aujourd&rsquo;hui disparue, l&rsquo;exploration des lunes glace\u0301es cherche des environnements encore habitables. Sous les tempe\u0301ratures glaciales du syste\u0300me jovien, elle ne provient pas du Soleil, mais de la gravite\u0301 que Jupiter exerce sur ses satellites : des \u00ab\u00a0effets de mare\u0301e\u00a0\u00bb semblables a\u0300 ce qui se passe sur Terre avec sa lune.<\/p>\n<p>Ce phe\u0301nome\u0300ne permet de \u00ab\u00a0dissiper la chaleur a\u0300 l&rsquo;inte\u0301rieur des lunes et de maintenir l&rsquo;eau a\u0300 l&rsquo;e\u0301tat liquide\u00a0\u00bb, de\u0301crypte Francis Rocard, plane\u0301tologue au Centre national d&rsquo;e\u0301tudes spatiales (Cnes).<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;oce\u0301an de Ganyme\u0300de est \u00ab\u00a0gigantesque\u00a0\u00bb, de\u0301crit Carole Larigauderie, cheffe du projet Juice au Cnes. Pie\u0301ge\u0301 entre deux e\u0301paisses couches de glace, il serait profond de plusieurs dizaines de kilome\u0300tres. \u00ab\u00a0Sur Terre, on arrive a\u0300 trouver des formes de vie au fond des abysses\u00a0\u00bb, remarque-t-elle. Certains e\u0301cosyste\u0300mes terrestres sont en effet capables de se maintenir sans lumie\u0300re et grouillent de micro-organismes comme des bacte\u0301ries ou des arche\u0301es.<\/p>\n<p><b>Missions comple\u0301mentaires<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Un tel e\u0301cosyste\u0300me a besoin de nutriments pour se maintenir. \u00ab\u00a0Toute la question est donc de savoir si l&rsquo;oce\u0301an de Ganyme\u0300de en contient\u00a0\u00bb, selon Athe\u0301na Coustenis. Il faudrait par exemple que l&rsquo;oce\u0301an puisse absorber des composants de\u0301pose\u0301s a\u0300 la surface, pour e\u0302tre ensuite dissous dans l&rsquo;eau, poursuit l&rsquo;astrophysicienne.<\/p>\n<p>Les instruments de Juice inspecteront cet oce\u0301an sous toutes ses coutures pour e\u0301valuer sa profondeur, sa distance de la surface et, espe\u0300re-t-on, sa composition.<\/p>\n<p>Vue artistique fournie par la Nasa et l&rsquo;ESA en 2015, repre\u0301sentant Ganyme\u0300de orbitant autour de Jupiter. \u00a9 Nasa \/ ESA, AFP (archives)<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;engin orbitera environ huit mois autour de Ganyme\u0300de, dont il pourra s&rsquo;approcher jusqu&rsquo;a\u0300 200 km d&rsquo;altitude, a\u0300 l&rsquo;abri des radiations.<\/p>\n<p>De\u0301nue\u0301e de magne\u0301tosphe\u0300re, sa s\u0153ur Europe est moins hospitalie\u0300re pour un engin spatial : la sonde ame\u0301ricaine Europa Clipper, qui atteindra sa destination en me\u0302me temps que Juice, ne pourra que survoler sa cible.
