MP Lulume Resigns as Buikwe DP Chair

Africa-Press – Uganda. Buikwe South Member of Parliament Dr Michael Lulume Bayigga has formally resigned as the Democratic Party (DP) district chairman, ending years of stewardship and paving the way for a new generation of leaders in Buikwe.

His resignation came during a peaceful party election held at Buikwe Town Council offices and overseen by Mukono South MP Fred Kayondo, who represented the party’s National Organising Secretary Herbert Rutagweera.

The election saw Kigonya Lukolokomba, the party’s former publicity secretary, triumph as the new DP district chairman with 49 votes. He beat rivals Ismael Sembatya and Jamil Nsubuga.

Other elected leaders include Mayanja Mamba as General Secretary, Seruyange Christopher as Party Organiser, Ismael Ssembatya as Youth Leader, and Namaganda Dorothy as Women Leader.

In his acceptance speech, Lukolokomba vowed to revive DP’s presence in Buikwe by uniting party members and reaching out to those who had left.

“We want to unite the party, attract back our colleagues who left, and strengthen our structures to fight for change together,” he said.

He accused fellow opposition parties of deviating from the struggle and instead turning their efforts against each other, warning that such divisions could allow the ruling NRM to regain lost ground.

Dr Lulume, a prominent voice in DP and Parliament, said he was stepping aside to give room for fresh leadership as he focuses on national party politics.

“I have done my part to popularise the Democratic Party in Buikwe. Now it’s time to pave the way for new leadership here as I prepare to contest for the party’s top national seat,” he said, referencing the position currently held by Justice Minister Norbert Mao.

He encouraged political players to follow his example and create space for others to serve.

“Leaving the chairmanship is my way of giving opportunity to those ready to lead,” Lulume added.

MP Fred Kayondo urged the newly elected leaders not to dwell on defections from the party, but instead concentrate on rebuilding DP’s grassroots presence in Buikwe.

“Let us not waste time regretting those who left. Our task is to ensure we nominate candidates for every position across Buikwe,” he said.

Kayondo also encouraged local mobilisation to ensure that no political position remains uncontested in future elections.

The election marks a new chapter for DP in Buikwe, with the incoming team tasked with re-energising a party that once enjoyed strong support in the district.

As national campaigns loom, the party hopes this leadership renewal will breathe fresh life into its structures and restore confidence among supporters.
