Africa-Press – Uganda. The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially commenced the nomination exercise for individuals vying for leadership positions representing Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at the village level.

These groups include the elderly, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), who are constitutionally recognized as needing special representation in leadership and governance.

This nomination exercise, which started June 2, 2025, and will run until June 10, 2025.

During this period, eligible individuals can submit their nomination papers to contest for various positions under the SIG categories in their respective villages.

According to the commission’s roadmap, after the nomination window closes, a voter identification and verification exercise will be conducted between June 12 and June 14, 2025.

The actual elections for the special interest group leaders at the village level will then take place on June 16, 2025.

The Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of adhering to the set guidelines during this process.

He urged all aspiring candidates to comply strictly with the rules governing nominations for representatives of special interest groups.

He also cautioned Electoral Commission officials and staff involved in the exercise to uphold these regulations diligently and to avoid unfairly disqualifying any eligible candidates.

He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive and transparent electoral process that allows all qualified individuals an equal opportunity to participate in leadership.

The Special Interest Group elections are a key component of Uganda’s broader local government electoral calendar.

The outcomes of these elections will feed into higher levels of representation, including sub-county, district, and national structures for the SIGs.
