Africa-Press – Uganda. Former presidential candidate John Katumba has confirmed his intention of a second shot at the presidency in the 2026 general election.
Katumba made the announcement at Kibuli Mosque during Eid al-Adha prayers, joining the Muslim community in observing one of Islam’s holiest days.
Dressed modestly and warmly engaging with worshippers, the 2021 presidential hopeful was greeted with cheers and open arms by the faithful gathered at the iconic hilltop mosque.
In the 2021 election, Katumba received 37,554 votes, representing 0.36% of the total, placing him last among the candidates.
Campaigning under the slogan “Katumba Oyee,” he started with limited resources, travelling alongside his EC-assigned security guard by public transport and on foot.
“I am here to stand with my fellow Ugandans, to share in this moment of reflection and unity. And yes, I will be running for president again in 2026,” Katumba said in a brief address after the prayers.
His presence at the Eid celebrations attracted public and media attention, highlighting his continued ties to grassroots communities.
True to his humble and energetic style, Katumba stressed the importance of inclusive leadership, youth empowerment, and national unity.
As the youngest candidate in the 2021 race, Katumba remains a familiar figure in public discourse, particularly among young voters.
His renewed presidential bid promises to add a fresh dynamic to the forthcoming elections.
With the country preparing for the 2026 polls, Katumba’s announcement is already stirring debates on generational change, political engagement, and the evolving landscape of Uganda’s democracy.
