Ten Arrested over Isingiro South NRM Campaign Violence

Africa-Press – Uganda. Police in Isingiro District have arrested ten people in connection with violent clashes that broke out during National Resistance Movement (NRM) joint campaigns in Isingiro South constituency last Friday.

The violence, which erupted in Kyempisi and Kyezimbire cells in Kikagate Sub-county, saw supporters of incumbent MP Alex Byarugaba Bakunda and his rival Mujuni Maari Asensio engage in confrontations that led to the burning of three vehicles.

Among the destroyed property were a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (Reg. No. UFZ 889Q), a white Toyota Harrier (Reg. No. UBA 438X), and another vehicle (Reg. No. UGA 309L).

Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira confirmed the arrests, calling the police response “intelligence-led” and part of a wider operation to restore calm in the area.

“We have so far arrested ten suspects in connection with the arson and malicious damage to property that occurred during the campaign violence,” he said.

“General inquiry files have been opened, and investigations are underway to bring all those responsible to book.”

Those arrested include Collins Arimpa, Hillary Aryanyijuka, Vincent Niwagaba, Adrian Tumuhamye, Abiyasi Mwebesa, Grace Juma, David Npakaniye, Aron Npakaniye, Obed Aharimpisya, and Alex Kiconco.

SP Kasasira noted that some suspects fled their homes after the incident, but police are actively pursuing them.

“Several suspects are still at large, but intelligence is actively pursuing leads. We urge those involved to surrender themselves before they are apprehended,” he said.

The clashes have once again brought the spotlight on Isingiro South’s long-standing record of politically motivated violence.

In the 2021 general elections, four people were killed in similar unrest.

The ten suspects are currently being held at Isingiro Central Police Station as investigations continue.
