Kitagwenda RDC Warns against Election Violence Ahead of NRM Primaries

Africa-Press – Uganda. As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party gears up for its internal primaries slated for July 17, 2025, authorities in Kitagwenda district have issued a stern warning against acts of violence and lawlessness during the electoral process.

The Kitagwenda Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Nicholus Nuwagira, called for calm, tolerance, and peaceful participation, emphasising that elections should not be treated as a life-or-death matter.

“Elections are not a do-or-die affair,” said Nuwagira. “They are simply an opportunity for people to democratically choose leaders of their choice. No one should turn this into a platform for chaos and division.”He added.

The RDC warned that security agencies are on high alert and will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone who attempts to disrupt the peace.

“Anyone planning to cause violence will be dealt with in accordance with the law. We want peaceful primaries, and we are fully prepared to maintain law and order,” he stressed.

Kitagwenda district has in the past witnessed chaotic scenes during elections. The most recent incident occurred during the NRM grassroots elections for Local Council 1 (LC1) structures, which were marred by confrontations and physical altercations among supporters.

Nuwagira urged all political actors, aspirants, and their supporters to exercise restraint and conduct themselves responsibly.

“We are appealing to all citizens and political players to promote harmony. Let us respect each other’s views and choices, and let peace prevail before, during, and after the primaries,” he said.

With less than a week to the highly anticipated NRM primaries, local authorities remain committed to ensuring a safe and transparent process that reflects the will of the people.
