Africa-Press – Uganda. Bishop Stuart University (BSU) has officially flagged off Seith Akamumpa, a fourth-year law student and long-distance athlete, to represent Uganda at the 2025 World University Games scheduled for July 16–27 in Bochum, Germany.

Akampa, the sole Ugandan competing in the men’s 10,000m event, will be defending his gold medal earned at the 2024 World University Cross Country Championships in Muscat, Oman.

His journey to global recognition began in 2021 at the university’s Vice Chancellor’s Tournament and has since seen him dominate regional and international competitions.

Speaking to Nile Post, Akampa expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to fly Uganda’s flag on the world stage once again.

“I want to thank the university for the support. Athletics demands both physical and financial investment, and they’ve been there for me,” he said. “Out of millions of students in Uganda, I’m honoured to be among the few selected for the national team.”

Akampa has also shined at the National University Games held at Uganda Christian University in 2023, where he clinched gold in the 10,000m, and at the East Africa University Games in Kisumu in December 2024, where he won gold in both the 10,000m and 5,000m races.

National athletics coach Gordon Ahimbisibwe, who has been training Akampa intensively for the past 40 days in Kabale, praised his athlete’s determination and discipline.

“Seith is one of the most focused and humble athletes I’ve worked with,” Ahimbisibwe said. “Despite an illness at the beginning of training, he’s now injury-free and fully prepared. I believe the Ugandan flag will be raised high in Germany.”

BSU Vice Chancellor Prof. John F. Mugisha hailed Akampa as a true embodiment of academic and sporting excellence.

“Akampa is a rare game-changer—he’s not only a world-class athlete but also a promising lawyer,” said Prof. Mugisha. “He remains humble and disciplined, and we are confident he will return with another gold medal.”

Prof. Mugisha reaffirmed the university’s full commitment to Akampa’s journey, noting that the institution would continue to support him and other beneficiaries of the sports scholarship program. “We pray for Seith and all our representatives. We believe in his talent, and as our motto states, ‘Our God Reigns.’”

The university sees Akampa’s success as a reflection of its commitment to holistic education—one that nurtures academic achievement, discipline, character, and athletic excellence.

Akampa is part of a 15-member Ugandan contingent headed to the global athletics stage in Germany, representing the country in the World University Games Track and Field competitions.

“I am going to Germany to compete in the 10,000m, and I’m ready to defend my victory,” Akampa declared.
