Africa-Press – Uganda. The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadan Mubaje, has called on politicians to uphold ethical leadership and God-consciousness, warning against deception, false promises, and moral decay in their quest for power.
Speaking during a thanksgiving ceremony (Shukr) held in Kavule Village, Buwungu Subcounty in Bugiri Muslim District, the Mufti stressed the importance of integrity and accountability in public life.
The event was hosted by the family of the late Hajj Bagye in honour of Amina Nakadama, a relative who had recently returned from performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
Nakadama, who is contesting for the Woman Member of Parliament seat for Bugiri District, received the Mufti’s warm congratulations.
But he used the occasion to caution her and other aspiring leaders to stay true to ethical and religious values.
“We call for clean politics—not the kind that promotes immorality,” Sheikh Mubaje said.
“Politics should not be reduced to a dirty game of lies, mudslinging, and character assassination. Such misguided mindsets do nothing to uplift society.”
He urged political candidates not to make promises beyond the constitutional powers of a Member of Parliament, underlining the importance of truthfulness during campaigns.
“Do not promise things you know you cannot deliver,” he said. “It is better to speak truthfully than to give people false hope.”
The Mufti further encouraged Muslim politicians to remain steadfast in their Islamic identity and values, discouraging them from compromising practices like modest dressing for political convenience.
“Be proud of who you are,” he said. “Wearing the veil and living by Islamic values is not a political liability, but a sign of moral strength.”
He also addressed the wider Muslim community, encouraging them to deepen their faith and strive to fulfill the religious obligation of Hajj—even if it means selling part of their property to do so.
“Strive to live righteously and always express sincere gratitude to Allah if you wish to receive His divine rewards, favours, and blessings,” he said.
Sheikh Mubaje commended the family of the late Haj Bagye for their unity and continued commitment to religious values following the patriarch’s passing.
The function attracted several regional religious leaders, including Kadhis from the districts of Jinja, Iganga, Bugiri, and Mayuge.
