Africa-Press – Uganda. Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda District, has retained the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag after sweeping the party primaries with a decisive victory.

Nyakato was declared winner on Friday evening by the NRM District Registrar, Dr Charles Bakamya, at the district tally centre after polling 29,249 votes—an overwhelming 62.6% of the total cast.

Her closest rival, Christine Kamubona Kyomugisha, secured 13,419 votes (28.7%), while Joan Asiimwe came in third with 3,994 votes (8.5%).

Speaking shortly after her victory, a jubilant Nyakato thanked the people of Kitagwenda for reaffirming their confidence in her leadership.

“I thank the people of Kitagwenda for the confidence they have shown in me once again. I do not take this support for granted,” she said.

Nyakato pledged to remain committed to her development agenda, citing health, education, infrastructure, and the empowerment of women and youth as her main priorities heading into a second term.

“My focus remains on improving the lives of our people through better health services, quality education, improved infrastructure, and empowering women and youth,” she emphasized.

In a gesture of unity, she also extended an olive branch to her former opponents, urging them to join her in working for the district’s development.

“This is a victory for all of us. I invite my fellow contenders to join me in pushing for a common development agenda that benefits every resident of Kitagwenda,” Nyakato said.

Presiding over the announcement of results, Dr. Bakamya lauded the smooth conduct of the election and praised both candidates and voters for maintaining peace and order throughout the process.

“The process was peaceful, transparent, and well-attended. Kitagwenda has once again shown maturity in political participation,” he noted.

With the party ticket secured, Nyakato now advances to the 2026 general elections, where she will seek to retain her seat against challengers from other political parties in what is expected to be a closely watched race in western Uganda.
