Africa-Press – Uganda. MTN Uganda, together with its financial arm MTN Mobile Money (U) Ltd, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) to fast-track digital transformation in the hospitality sector.
Under the agreement, more than 780 hotels under UHOA will adopt mobile money solutions, e-commerce platforms, and enterprise connectivity tools to modernise hotel operations and enhance customer service.
The hospitality sector employs nearly 70% of Uganda’s tourism workforce.
The partnership is part of MTN’s “Ambition 2025” strategy to transition from a traditional telecom to a full-scale technology company. It positions the telecom giant to offer tailored solutions to one of Uganda’s key tourism-related sectors.
“This collaboration is a strong testament to the power of partnerships in realising Uganda’s broader digital agenda,” said Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager for MTN Enterprise Business, who spoke on behalf of MTN CEO Sylvia Mulinge.
The hospitality sector accounts for nearly 70% of employment in Uganda’s tourism industry. With this partnership, hotel owners are expected to benefit from streamlined operations, cashless transactions, and improved guest experiences.
Hon. Susan Muhwezi, Chairperson of UHOA, hailed the agreement as a “pivotal step” toward modernising the industry.
“We are opening doors to cutting-edge technology, seamless payment systems, and digital infrastructure that our members can leverage to stay competitive,” she said.
MTN MoMo will support hotels in integrating digital financial services, including cashless bookings, bill payments, and mobile-based hotel management systems. MTN’s Enterprise Business Unit will offer reliable internet, guest Wi-Fi, and cloud-based hospitality software.
Dennis Kakonge, General Manager for Corporate Services at MTN MoMo, emphasised the value to hotel operators: “Hotels will now be able to cater to both local and international guests using modern payment options backed by MTN MoMo’s reliability and reach.”
The MoU also lays the foundation for deeper collaboration with stakeholders such as the Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Tour Operators Association. It further commits MTN and UHOA to sector-wide consultations to tailor digital solutions to the specific needs of hotel businesses.
The partnership was showcased at the launch of UHOA Expo 2025, which will run from August 1–3 highlighting innovations in tourism and sustainability.
