Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has raised alarm over reports of bribery and intimidation during the vetting of candidates seeking the party’s endorsement for the 2026 general elections.
Speaking from the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Harriet Chemutai, the chairperson of the NUP Election Management Committee (EMC), confirmed that the committee had received several complaints of misconduct from ongoing vetting exercises in Makindye Ssabagabo and Kira Municipality.
“We have received reports that some individuals are trying to bribe their way through this process. Others are spreading propaganda, claiming they have already received the party flag. This is completely false and unacceptable,” Chemutai said.
She added that the process has also been marred by acts of intimidation, with some aspirants allegedly discouraging their opponents from continuing with their bids.
“This behavior is not only unethical but also goes against the values and spirit of our party. We ask all NUP members to ignore information from aspirants and only follow official communication from the committee,” she emphasized.
The EMC has warned that those found engaging in bribery, misinformation, or intimidation risk disciplinary action, including possible disqualification from the process.
Despite the tensions, hundreds of aspirants from Makindye and Kira turned up to be vetted, with many expressing hope that the committee’s stance would ensure a level playing field.
“I feel reassured by the committee’s transparency,” said one Kira Municipality aspirant. “It gives us confidence that the process will not be manipulated.”
Chemutai reiterated that no party flags have been issued yet and that the selection process remains open, fair, and merit-based.
“We want to assure all members and aspirants that no one will be favored. Every application will be evaluated on the same criteria,” she said.
The vetting process is set to continue, with aspirants from Entebbe Municipality expected to appear before the committee on Tuesday.
