Africa-Press – Uganda. Tension erupted during the NRM primaries in Nansana East 1 B as party agents clashed over the results of the councillor elections between Godfrey Mawejja and Moses Jagwe.
During the vote counting, electoral officials narrowly escaped attacks, with police stepping in to provide tight security.
Officers were forced to intervene after Jagwe’s agents attempted to block election supervisors from leaving the tallying center.
Earlier, polling for the primaries at Green Light School had proceeded peacefully. Voters turned out in large numbers to elect their party flagbearer for mayor, with Samuel Mugabi and Jonan Muchunguzi competing in a hotly contested race.
Despite the midday heat, supporters queued in long lines, showing overwhelming support for Mugabi.
However, pandemonium erupted during the vote counting for the councillor position. Opponents’ agents protested the results, and Jagwe’s team reportedly tried to seize ballot papers, sparking violent scuffles.
Police were forced to use reasonable force to evacuate the election supervisors and restore order.
Some voters accused the candidates of making false promises during the campaigns, claiming the NRM had become overly focused on money and dishonest tactics.
Samuel Mugabi thanked his supporters for their votes and urged his former rivals to work with him to advance the party.
In many parts of Nansana—including Zimbena Gardens, Kazo, and St. Steven’s Church—Mugabi won overwhelmingly at several polling stations.
