Africa-Press – Uganda. Opportunity Bank Uganda Limited, in partnership with Opportunity International UK, has officially opened its 25th branch in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, reinforcing its commitment to expanding financial access for both refugee and host communities in Kamwenge District.
The branch was launched by Mrs. Mary Oakes, CEO of Opportunity International UK, alongside Mr. Owen Amanya, CEO of Opportunity Bank Uganda, and Ms. Jacqueline Kobusingye Opondo, Chairperson of the Bank’s Board of Directors.
Home to over 110,000 refugees as of June 2025, Rwamwanja now benefits from the Bank’s growing refugee-focused financial services.
Opportunity Bank Uganda currently serves over 19,000 refugees nationwide and has disbursed more than shs 4 billion in loans targeting refugee communities.
“This branch is more than a business milestone; it reaffirms our commitment to walking alongside this community as they rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose,” said Mr. Owen Amanya.
“Our experience in Nakivale has shown that refugees equipped with the right financial tools can become powerful contributors to economic growth. We are proud to extend that opportunity to Rwamwanja.”
Agriculture is the primary economic activity in Rwamwanja, and the new branch will offer credit for agricultural inputs, small-scale agribusinesses, and support for women-led groups, youth enterprises, and financial literacy programs for both refugees and host community members.
