Absence of Electoral Reforms could Trigger Chaos in 2026

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Democratic Front (DF) has blamed Parliament’s inaction on electoral reforms for the overwhelming number of candidates seeking the presidency in the 2026 elections.

Party chairperson Lubega Mukaaku warned that the absence of reforms has turned the contest into a “free-for-all.”

Addressing the media at DF headquarters in Mengo, Mukaaku said, “What we are seeing today is the very disorder we sought to prevent.

These reforms would have created clear rules, professionalism, and accountability, but without them Uganda has become a laughingstock.”

Electoral Commission statistics indicate that over 170 individuals have already picked nomination forms to contest for the presidency under the DF banner—a figure unprecedented in Uganda’s political history.

The reforms, tabled last year in Parliament by Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, were designed to strengthen the independence of the Electoral Commission, curb misuse of security agencies during campaigns, reduce excessive presidential powers in electoral matters, and streamline the nomination process.

Analysts argue that these measures would have filtered out unserious aspirants, ensuring a more structured and credible contest.

Mukaaku warned that the current surge is not a sign of political vibrancy but a symptom of a broken system.

“If reforms had been passed, we would not have 170 people declaring for presidency. We would have a professional, credible race that commands respect locally and internationally,” he said.
