Africa-Press – Uganda. Workers’ MP Arinaitwe Rwakajara has secured the position of Chairperson of the Workers’ League in the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after his rival Ezera Kanyana stepped down, leaving him unopposed.
The development underscores the party’s push for unity in representing workers’ interests at its top organ.
Kanyana, who had been Rwakajara’s only challenger, announced his withdrawal while addressing workers’ delegates from Buganda in Kampala.
He said his decision was guided by the need for a united voice in the party’s leadership.
“I’ve withdrawn from the race for the sake of workers’ unity and progress,” Kanyana said, adding that discussions with senior leaders, including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, had influenced his move.
He dismissed claims of having been compromised, stressing that his decision was made in good faith.
“I have not been compromised. My decision is driven by the need to prioritize workers’ rights and interests,” Kanyana explained.
Rwakajara hailed the withdrawal as a “commendable move” that would allow him to focus on strengthening workers’ representation.
“I’m glad Ezera Kanyana has seen it fit to withdraw. This will enable me to efficiently represent workers at the CEC of NRM,” he said.
He pledged to push for favorable policies and ensure that workers’ voices are heard within the party. Other candidates contesting for Workers’ MP positions also called for prioritizing welfare issues and policy reforms that directly benefit workers.
As the NRM conference draws closer, attention will now shift to whether Rwakajara can deliver on his promises and translate workers’ demands into tangible outcomes within the party’s highest decision-making body.
