Government Launches Mechanization Support for Luweero Farming

Africa-Press – Uganda. Government has unveiled a new package of farming inputs and mechanization support under the Greater Luweero Affirmative Action Plan, aimed at transforming agriculture from subsistence to commercial levels in the districts of Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola.

The latest delivery, made at the Luweero District Administration Headquarters on Friday, included milking cans, maize shellers, tarpaulins, chicks, coffee seedlings, foliage choppers, and fertilizers.

These inputs are in addition to seven heavy-duty tractors already distributed to farmer groups and individuals in the region since the program was launched in October 2024.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Deputy Secretary General, Rose Namayanja Nsereko, emphasized the government’s renewed commitment to revamping the region’s farming sector.

“This is the second batch of delivery for the farmers, but the plan is wider and targets a vibrant farming sector. Greater Luweero missed an opportunity to benefit from a deliberate government plan to revamp the region, but the opportunity is now open on the directive of President Museveni,” she said.

As part of efforts to strengthen livestock farming, the government has also delivered three refrigerators to enhance the vaccination process across the cattle corridor districts.

According to the State Minister for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama, this initiative is designed to curb livestock diseases and expand opportunities for commercial dairy production.

“We have already secured vaccines to vaccinate all the livestock to check Foot-and-Mouth Disease, distributed milk coolers, milking cans, and other farm implements. Plans are underway to introduce walking tractors in addition to the heavy-duty tractors already in use,” Rwamirama said.

As part of the ongoing rollout, government will extend support to 45 dairy farmer groups, 30 crop farmer groups, initiatives for pasture improvement, and the distribution of coffee seedlings to 3,600 farmer groups, complemented with fertilizers and fungicides to boost yields

Farmers have welcomed the initiative as a long-awaited shift toward modernized agriculture.

One of the beneficiaries from Ntangala Village in Katikamu Sub-county, Luweero District, Joseph Rwevuze, said the program will enhance productivity and competitiveness.

“I have received a maize sheller which will be shared by farmers in my area. Mechanization of agriculture is the way to go. The farming world has shifted to modern agriculture, and we need to adapt to tap into global markets,” he said.

The Greater Luweero Affirmative Action Plan, launched in October 2024, is a government strategy to address longstanding socio-economic challenges in the districts of Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola. Despite being the cradle of the ruling NRM government during the 1980s liberation struggle, the region has lagged in development.

The affirmative plan seeks to bridge this gap through investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and social services.

With the latest rollout, government officials say the region is on course to becoming a hub for modern, commercial agriculture—ensuring better livelihoods for farmers and strengthening Uganda’s food security.
