Ssenyonyi Urges Fairness in Kyagulanyi Nomination

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Leader of Opposition and National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi has called on the police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to uphold professionalism and fairness during the nomination of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for the 2026 presidential elections.

Ssenyonyi condemned ongoing interference by security agencies in NUP activities ahead of the nomination scheduled.

“Yesterday we saw police and the military behaving very well when the NRM held their events. They had a few supporters, and we were allowed to move through town positions. That was their day, and that is okay. We do not begrudge them,” Ssenyonyi said on Tuesday.

He urged authorities to extend the same courtesy to NUP supporters, ensuring that nomination events and rallies are conducted peacefully.

“The people’s president is going to be nominated today. We hope police and the military will have similar good manners so that we can hold our activities safely,” he added.

Ssenyonyi’s remarks come amid growing concerns over past interference by security forces in opposition activities, which party leaders warn could escalate tensions and limit citizen participation in the electoral process.

The nomination is expected to culminate in a final rally in Natete, where large crowds of supporters are anticipated.
