Africa-Press – Uganda. In a move to promote innovative mechanisms for reducing case backlogs in the courts of judicature, the International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation in Kampala (ICAMEK) has unveiled Uganda’s first-ever National University Arbitration Moot Competition.
The launch, which coincided with ICAMEK’s seventh anniversary celebrations, seeks to equip university law students with practical arbitration and mediation skills, preparing them to embrace alternative dispute resolution (ADR) alongside traditional litigation.
The competition will bring together students from universities across the country, who will prepare and argue mock cases before panels of experienced arbitration professionals.
Organisers say the moot will not only enrich law curricula—where arbitration is often underrepresented—but also provide a platform for students to network with practitioners and kickstart careers in ADR.
According to ICAMEK Registrar, Norah Kaggwa, the university moot embodies the centre’s mission of fostering a new generation of dispute resolution experts in Uganda.
“As we celebrate ICAMEK at seven, we reaffirm our mission of promoting dialogue over conflict and building capacity. Through this University Moot, we aim to plant a seed and cultivate a culture where young lawyers value arbitration and mediation as much as litigation,” Kaggwa said.
Founded in 2018, ICAMEK has rapidly established itself as Uganda’s leading arbitration institution, offering mediation, adjudication, and dispute avoidance services.
Over the past seven years, it has worked closely with the judiciary, trained hundreds of professionals, and positioned Uganda as an emerging hub for ADR in the region.
The launch of the Moot comes at a time when Uganda’s courts continue to grapple with high case backlog.
