Africa-Press – Uganda. The Member of Parliament for Masaka district, Joanita Nalule, has urged the government to launch a special initiative aimed at supporting local fishermen by providing them with boat engines.

Speaking during the “Buganda Ku Museveni” campaign held in Nakiyaga Village, Buwunga Subcounty, Masaka District, Nalule emphasised the urgent need to empower fishing communities in the region, likening the proposed initiative to the government’s ongoing support for bodaboda riders.

“Just as the government provides motorcycles to bodaboda men through loan or credit schemes, the same should be done for our fishermen,” Nalule stated. “Many of them are struggling to make ends meet because they lack engine-powered boats, which are essential for successful fishing in today’s conditions.” And remember these engines are too much expensive for the fishermen to afford.” She added

The fishing industry remains a crucial source of income for thousands of families around Lake Victoria and other water bodies in Uganda.

However, many local fishermen still rely on manual or outdated methods, which limit their productivity and expose them to dangerous conditions on the water.

Nalule believes that equipping fishermen with engines would not only boost their catch but also contribute to food security and economic growth in the region.

She also stressed the importance of inclusive development, where all sectors – especially traditional and rural professions – are supported in a practical and sustainable way.

“These fishermen are the backbone of our communities. Supporting them means supporting our markets, our households, and our future,” she added.

Residents welcomed her proposal with applause, with many expressing hope that such initiatives would be prioritised in the next government development programs.

The “Buganda Ku Museveni” campaign, which has been mobilising support for the ruling party in the central region, continues to serve as a platform for leaders and aspiring politicians to engage with the public and share their policy agendas.
