Africa-Press – Uganda. The African Union (AU) has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and a distinguished statesman of the African continent.
Odinga passed away at the age of 80 from a hospital in India on Wednesday morning, leaving behind a legacy of democratic advocacy, regional integration, and continental leadership.
In a statement, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf extended condolences to the Odinga family, the government and people of Kenya, and the entire African community.
“H.E. Raila Odinga was a towering figure in Kenya’s political life and a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centered development,” Youssouf said.
“His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent.”
Raila Odinga, the son of Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and was a five-time presidential candidate.
Throughout his career, he was celebrated for his courage, resilience, and dedication to dialogue and democratic institutions.
Beyond Kenya, Odinga played a critical role in continental affairs. He served as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, advocating for Africa’s integration and the establishment of initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
His influence was recognized at the highest levels; Odinga also contested for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission in the last election, demonstrating his commitment to pan-African leadership.
“Mr Odinga’s contributions extended far beyond national borders,” Chairperson Youssouf said.
“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa.”
Youssouf defeated Odinga on February 15 in the AU Commission election.
The AU joins the people of Kenya and the African continent in mourning the loss of Raila Odinga, celebrating his life, service, and enduring legacy as a champion of democracy and continental development.
