Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the youth of Buganda to lead responsible, disciplined, and productive lives, emphasizing that their diligence and integrity are key to building a strong and progressive nation.
He made the remarks during a meeting with youth representatives from Kampala kampalaArchdiocese, who were led by Father Joseph Mary Ssebunnya, at his residence Butikkiro in Mengo.
The Katikkiro warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for their visit, commending them for their involvement in productive community initiatives and development-oriented activities.
“I am impressed by your commitment to hard work and planning. When young people dedicate themselves to meaningful work, they not only build their own futures but also contribute to the progress of their country,” the Katikkiro said.
The Katikkiro cautioned the youth against immoral behavior that undermines cultural values and societal well-being. He particularly warned against the rising trend of reckless relationships among young people, which he said often lead to emotional distress and health complications.
He urged the youth to embrace moral discipline and marry while still young and energetic, so they can establish stable families and raise children responsibly.
“Do not wait until it is too late to start a family. Use your energy and time wisely to build a solid foundation for your lives,” he advised.
The Katikkiro further encouraged the youth to embrace science and technology, saying these are indispensable tools for personal advancement and national development in the modern world.
Addressing the dangers of misinformation, the Katikkiro laughed off false claims that had circulated on social media following a recent football match at Nakivubo Stadium — where some people alleged that he had used an expensive mobile phone.
“Those stories are completely false. Some people spread lies because they do not know the truth. I encourage you to verify information and avoid being misled by such rumors,” he said, urging the youth to use social media responsibly and positively.
Fr Joseph Mary Ssebunnya, who led the delegation, thanked the Katikkiro for his guidance and highlighted the importance of strengthening the partnership between the Church and the Buganda Kingdom in shaping young people’s values.
“The Church has established programs that empower the youth without religious bias. Our goal is to help young people appreciate their culture while also embracing education and innovation,” Father Ssebunnya noted.
Speaking on behalf of the youth, Sserunjogi Alex, the Chairperson of the Kampala County Youth Group, expressed gratitude to the Buganda Kingdom for its continued engagement with young people. He particularly applauded His Majesty the Kabaka for his leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS across Buganda and Uganda.
The youth also reaffirmed their commitment to environmental conservation, recognizing that a clean and sustainable environment is crucial for the future of Buganda.
During the visit, the group presented the Katikkiro with a book on environmental conservation, symbolizing their dedication to preserving nature. In appreciation of their initiatives, the Katikkiro awarded them certificates of recognition for their efforts in promoting environmental protection and community development.
The Katikkiro urged the youth to remain focused, disciplined, and hardworking, assuring them that the Kingdom values their contribution to its ongoing development programs.
“You are the future of Buganda. Remain steadfast, principled, and purposeful, and you will make a meaningful impact in your communities,” he concluded.
The meeting underscored Buganda Kingdom’s continuous commitment to youth empowerment, moral guidance, and environmental stewardship, aligning with the Kabaka’s vision of a prosperous and self-reliant Buganda.
