Africa-PressUganda. A-26-year-old man was yesterday shot in the right leg during the attempted assassination of outgoing Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala.

Unknown assailants yesterday shot at a car carrying Gen Katumba wounding him and killing his daughter and driver.A mechanic, only identified as Mr Kibalama, was also injured in the attack.

At the time of the shooting, Mr Kibalama was working in a battery workshop, a few metres away from where Gen Katumba was attacked.

Mr Faizo Ssali, the owner of the workshop, told Daily Monitor that they were preparing to start work when the shooting started.

“I rushed to close the doors but all of a sudden, a bullet hit my worker in the leg,” Mr Ssali said.

He said Kibalama was bleeding profusely but had to wait until the shooting stopped before seeking help.He said when he established that Gen Katumba was being ferried to a nearby clinic by a motorcycles, he also booked another motorcycles for his injured worker and followed the general.

“I did not know what to do. Gen Katumba was taken to Malcom Health Centre and I also took my employee there to get treatment,” he said.

Mr Ssali said he left his colleague at the hospital, but government officials evacuated him to a referral medical centre later.“Kibalama left his phone in the workshop. I cannot trace him,” Mr Ssali said.
