Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda beat Senegal 1-0 to storm the round of 16 of the Fifa U-17 World Cup finals in Qatar on Saturday.
Midfielder Abubakali Walusimbi’s powerful 13th-minute strike proved decisive as Uganda defeated Senegal 1-0 in the Fifa U-17 World Cup round of 32 on Saturday afternoon.
Uganda capitalised on a loose pass in midfield, with Hamuza Sengooba once again central to the build-up. Sengooba—provider of the decisive assist against France—charged forward from the centre circle before releasing Walusimbi on the right edge of the box.
With space to measure his effort, Walusimbi unleashed a pile-driver that evaded two desperate Senegalese blocks and left goalkeeper Vincent Gomis rooted, drawing cheers around Aspire Zone Pitch 7 in Doha.
The victory sets up a potentially mouthwatering round-of-16 clash against European giants Germany, who play Burkina Faso before confirming Uganda’s next opponents.
The Burkinabe were leading 1-0 courtesy of Mohamed Zongo’s early strike.
Uganda now progress alongside global heavyweights Mexico, Portugal, Brazil, France, Switzerland, Ireland, Morocco, England and Mali.
For Brian Ssenyondo’s Cubs, this continues a remarkable run in the country’s first-ever appearance at any Fifa World Cup tournament—one that already includes a historic win over France to book the Senegal encounter.
