Auditor General Seeks Shs 2.4 Billion for Citizen Engagement

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Office of the Auditor General (OAG) is seeking Shs.2.4 billion to implement initiatives that involve citizens in auditing public funds.

This proposal has sparked questions from MPs about the impact of such initiatives and the amount of money recovered from corrupt individuals named in audit reports.”We want to implement this initiative to see how we can involve the citizens in our audit processes. It is something that other audit institutions are now doing, very effective in ensuring that whatever we do creates the impact desired,” Stephen Katerega, Assistant Auditor General-in charge of Corporate Affairs, told Parliament’s Finance Committee on January 21, 2026.

Katerega emphasised that citizen engagement is crucial for effective auditing and accountability. However, MPs pressed for details on the expected outcomes and how the funds would be utilised.MPs also sought information on the amount of money recovered from individuals implicated in audit reports, seeking assurance that the proposed initiatives would yield tangible results.

The OAG’s request is part of its 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper presentation.
