Africa-Press – Uganda. Kilak North legislator Anthony Akol and Chairman of the Acholi Parliamentary Group (APG), has urged Ugandans and MPs to support Speaker of Parliament Anita Among to continue leading the House in the incoming 12th Parliament.

Akol praised Among’s leadership, highlighting her experience and the improved cohesion of the chamber under her tenure.

In a recorded message, Akol said he has observed how Parliament has been managed under various leaders and believes Among’s leadership has brought stability.

“I have seen the administration of Parliament under different Speakers such as Rebecca Kadaga, Jacob Oulanyah, and Anita Among..I must tell you, in my experience and how the Parliament of Uganda has been managed, we are blessed to have an institution with the person of Anita Among,” he said.

Akol appealed to Ugandans, particularly leaders across the country, to rally behind Among so that she continues steering Parliament in the next term.

“My plead to the people especially Ugandans is we must maintain Speaker Among to be our Speaker in the 12th Parliament. We will be able to do so much,” he said.

Among became Speaker in 2022 and, together with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, has presided over what Akol has described as a more cohesive House, with fewer disruptions and smoother handling of parliamentary business.

Akol said her leadership has grown stronger with time.

“I saw how she started and how she progressed to become more experienced now and I think 12th Parliament will be better than what it was before,” he said.

His remarks come as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has reportedly already endorsed Among and Tayebwa for another term, with the party arguing that maintaining the current leadership will help secure stability ahead of the 12th Parliament.

Akol appealed to voters and legislators alike to maintain continuity at the top as the 12th Parliament is formed.

Among was elected Speaker in 2022 after the death of her predecessor Oulanyah.

Alongside Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa is praised within the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) for having played a significant role in sustaining parliamentary operations.

As preparations intensify ahead of the parliamentary leadership elections following the general polls, the NRM is believed to have moved early to promote stability by endorsing the current leadership team.

The party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has reportedly backed both Among and Tayebwa to contest for another term as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, a reflection of the confidence within party structures in their leadership continuity.

Speaker Among and Tayebwa were also among those declared elected unopposed in their constituencies for the 12th Parliament, securing Bukedea District (Among) and Ruhinda North (Tayebwa) seats without opposition in the nomination process.
